TRAINING REPORT

LETS ROLL

Lets Roll has been a great horse for us having won prize money in 37 of his 50 races to date. He has now gone through the £100,000 barrier (£105,658 to be precise) which is very good for a 1400gns yearling. He has been a great advert for everyone involved with him. LETS ROLL ran at Musselburgh for his first race this season, the going was firmer than ideal and the pace of the race was VERY strong. On such a sharp track as Musselburgh he really did have trouble going with the pace and was second last turning for home, well off the pace, but he ran on very strongly and was catching the leaders hand over fist in the last two furlongs - on a stiffer track he would have run even better. He was beaten about 7 lengths - and should improve. It is planned to run him at HAYDOCK next which is a stiffer track and if the handicapper takes a few pounds off him he could well go close next time he runs.

DANZATRICE (ONE THOUSAND THREE HUNDRED TO GO)

2009 sees further improvement in the form of this really good genuine mare. Her last win at RIPON saw her rating go up to 74 - her highest ever. Considering her first winning rating was 43, this represents quite a step up. She has been a great advert for the yard and everyone connected with her, she is now the winner of seven races, and she has been placed 24 times. As she has got stronger she is now well suited by two miles - she stays every yard really well. As she has moved onto a much higher rating she will now have to race in a higher grade of race, and is planned to run her next race in a two mile handicap for horses rated 71-86 at YORK on JUNE 12th. Our quest this season has been to try and get her onto £40,000 in prize money - her recent win took her to £38,700 - so we have not got too far to go. I am pretty sure that she will continue to add to her already impressive haul.

SPRINKLER

This filly is very small - but has a heart as big as a lion. She has won once and been placed second twice, only beaten a short head once. SPRINKLER finished third in her first hurdle race, jumping extremely well. We were lucky to find a weak maiden hurdle for SPRINKLER , and making all the running, jumping really well she gradually went clear to win by a very comfortable 6 lengths. Running over 2 miles and six furlongs at NEWCASTLE Sprinkler rather dissappointed us but she has since run really well in a two mile three furlong handicap hurdle at Towcester, staying on very well at the end and looking in need of a longer distance. She has come out of the race well and should be ready to run again soon. SPRINKLER ran her usual good race at SEDGEFIELD this week, staying on well to be third, whilst beaten a long way I think time will prove that the winner is quite useful and was absolutely thrown in at trhe weights. Again SPRINKLER showed that staying is her game and we will be looking to step her up to even longer distances in the future. I have avoided running this filly on the VERY HEAVY going which has prevailed throughout the whole of the Winter - we hopefully now have a fresh filly to run during the Summer on the better going. She is in good strong work now and should be ready for a race by the end of the month.

SEA VENTURE

Sea Venture made a very promising start to his racing hurdling career at WETHERBY. Held up in rear SEA VENTURE jumped extremely well in the early stages of his first hurdle race and was gradually allowed to improve his position, which he did quite comfortably, he was about fifth jumping the second last - and ran on very strongly to be a fast finishing second beaten a neck. This was a most encouraging first run over hurdles. SEA VENTURE has since been placed third once in a pretty hot race at DONCASTER - but was very unlucky when falling when in a challenging position at Wetherby. His schooling since shows no indicatiuon of him having lost his confidence and I am hopeful that he will make amends in his next race. SEA VENTURE ran really well this week at MARKET RASEN to finish second behind what looked a very well handicapped horse. He should not be too long before he wins a race. SEA VENTURE ran over two miles three furlongs at MARKET RASEN and looked to get the extra distance well enough finishing fourth to a rather well handicapped horse. He continues to run and jump well and if the handicapper ever gives him a chance he should pick up a hurdle race before going chasing.

SMARTIES PARTY

This filly is a really good looking daughter of TAMURE. She is a half sister to a useful chaser in POPPY MAROON. This filly was a very strong finishing fifth at HEXHAM last week and looks sure to win a National Hunt Flat race before embarquing on a hurdling career. Racing well within herself in mid-field at WETHERBY this filly made good headway in the straight to hit the front inside the final furlong, but was just run out of it close home. This is a game genuine filly, who stays well and will certainly do well over hurdles. SMARTIES PARTY is now schooling over hurdles on a regular basis and is schooling really well. In her first race over hurdles at KELSO this filly jumped well and kept on in genuine style to be third, which was a very satisfactory start to her career over hurdles. The going was probably softer than she really wants, and she lookes as though a step up in distance would suit her which is really what she is bred for. SMARTIES PARTY ran a race full of promise at UTTOXETER this week being a fast finishing fifth having got a bit too far behind in the early stages. At Cartmel in her fourth race over hurdles SMARTIES PARTY was a staying on third on going which was softer than ideal. She looked as though a step up to two and a half miles would be beneficial to her. She should now be allotted a handicap mark and I will look for a novices handicap for her next race. SMARTIES PARTY ran a really genuine race at TOWCESTER - coming from well of the pace trp lead between the last two hurdles, but could not quite hold the winner, she was beaten a length - but was seven lengths infront of the third. I hope the handicapper is not too hard on her. She looks sure to win races, staying is her forte - and she looks 100% genuine which counts for a lot. Dropping back to two miles in a mares only novices hurdle at Wetherby we decided to make plenty of use of her proven stamina, jumping off very handy she led from the start quickened clear on the home turn and was about three lenghts up at the last hurdle when she made a complete mess of it, coming to a standstill - consequently getting caught on the run in by the winner. She looked a very unlucky loser and certainly deserves some compensation soon. Off a rating of 100 I decided to run SMARTIES PARTY in a decent handicap off a low weight at CHELTENHAM - she carried 10st 10lbs less 7lbs claimed by her young jockey. Racing in a fairly prominent position on the inside, she did not get the best of runs, losing a her place coming down the hill into the straight she had to be switched to the outside where again she met interference, being quite badly hampered going to the last hurdle, which caused her to make quite a bad mistake at the last - she then ran on very strongly to be fifth. This was a good run, and with more luck in running and a clear passage she would almost certainly have finished in the first three. This filly is still a maiden, but looks well capable of at least winning a small race - and on this running could well win a good race. SMARTIES PARTY is a tough very genuine filly, another great advert for her sire TAMURE who undoubtedly would be one of the top stallions if he got some good mares to help him. We are waiting for the going to dry up before we run SMARTIES PARTY again. Stepping back up to two and a half miles SMARTIES PARTY was a reasonably comfortable winner of her latest race at SEDGEFIELD, having been placed five times she certainly deserved to win a race. She has a lot of things going for her, she is very genuine, stays very well (will probably get three miles eventually) and is a fast acurate jumper. She is a filly to follow, as she could well win again. For reasons as yet unexplained SMARTIES PARTY ran a poor race at AYR - well below what she is capable of. We are still looking for a reason.

PETELLA

This 2.y.o filly is a FULL sister to both LETS ROLL and DANZATRICE and we are hoping that in time she will develop into a similar type of staying animal as they are. She ran over five furlongs last week and behaved extremely well, she was only beaten 9 lengths at the finish and will surely improve when stepped up in distance. Over six furlongs at HAYDOCK in a maiden fillies race, PETELLA ran very well indeed to be a close up 5th beaten about two and a half lenghts. This looks a very promising filly in the making. PETELLA has now had three races and has been given a rating of 65. In her first race of the season at HAYDOCK - over a mile - PETELLA ran a very promising race to finish fourth. She was reduced in the ratrings to 63 which will help and I am looking to step her up in distance for her next run. She will run in a 10 furlong, three year olds fillies only handicap at NOTTINGHAM on Tuesday May 19th, providing that the going is not too firm

SPRUZZO

SPRUZZO is a VERY good looking new addition to the yard. He is a two year old FULL brother to winning hurdler SPRINKLER. He is much bigger and stronger than SPRINKLER and I fully expect him to run this season as a two year old. He has a pedigree packed with stamina and I do not expect him to show his best until running over longer distances, but he is also half brother to a very good horse I trained called BUZZ - who won as a two year old and went on to win good races as a three year old. I am hoping that SPRUZZO can follow in his footsteps. He will have his firat race over six furlongs at PONTEFRACT on Monday October 20th all being well. SPRUZZO ran very green at PONTEFRACT. We will give him at least one more race on the turf. We will not see the best of him until running over longer distances next year - he has a real stayers pedigree. SPRUZZO ran a much improved race at WOLVERHAMPTON on the All Weather surface over the much longer distance of 9 furlongs. He kept on well - and will stay much further as his pedigree suggests. Hopefully he will now get a handicap mark and we will look for a three year old only handicap over even further. This is certainly a horse to follow. The handicapper has requested that we run SPRUZZO again before he will allot him a rating. Now rated 52 we will not run SPRUZZO until turf racing starts. He will start over about 10 furlongs in 0-60 handicaps - but I am pretty sure that overtime he will progress to running over much longer distances - probably up to two miles, and he could easily develop into a useful staying handicapper. SPRUZZO ran in his first handicap off a rating of 52 over a mile and a quarter which would be short enough for him - he raced in mid field - made progress to be on the heels of the leaders two out, but was a bit outpaced close home. He was beaten about 10 lengths, I would expect to see him improve quite a lot especially when running over longer distances.

RISING SHADOW

RISING SHADOW is a new arrival in the yard. He is a VERY good horse with a proven track record having won seven races and over £130,000 in prize money. He is a six furlong horse who must have some give in the going. He is rated 91 and will compete in high class six furlong handicaps throughout the season. He was only beaten four lengths in last years AYR GOLD CUP, and could be capable of winning a similar race. He has a great temperament and we are looking forward to seeing him run, probably very early in the season trying to take advantage of any soft going which may be around. As the going was described as GOOD to FIRM at Doncaster we decided not to run RISING SHADOW as he is a proven soft ground specialist. His next entry will be at YORK on Friday May 15th. All we need is some rain.
